A Short Story - Part 1

As he passes by a fruit store, looks around for a second to see if anyone has noticed his presence, and then within a split second grabs an apple and runs off.  He keeps running without looking back until he cannot anymore.  He is out of breath and his whole body is shivering.  Although he has stopped running, he is afraid to look back.  He gets the courage to convince himself to look back and notices the empty street behind him.

As he gets excited about not getting caught, his mother’s face starts to appear before him “Jack, patience is the key to life and being good is the only way to live it.”  His mother was a patient lady; she spent her whole life trying to make a decent living out of her low income job.  She wanted Jack to get educated and help the less fortunate.  She made him promise right before her death that he will always remember her sayings and live by them.

“Mother, if only you had also warned me about this harsh world” he mumbled to himself.
